More planning informationIs the boat just for our party?
Yes. All four individual safari offers are planned as private boats for your booking party, including the Standard Safari. The longer Private Classic adds a temple landing and a fuller island route.
How do Sri Lankan and foreign visitor prices work?
Select your visitor catalogue. Local Standard, Private and Birdwatching fares are per boat. Foreign fares are per adult, with a minimum of two paying guests. The local turtle combination is a total for two adults. Per-person safari fares: under 5 free, ages 5–11 half the adult rate, and age 12+ the adult rate. Local boat fares stay unchanged.
Can I add pickup without a return transfer?
Yes. Hotel pickup and drop-off are independent options. Foreign transfer rates are per vehicle, per one-way leg. Local transfers and other areas need a quote. Vehicle suitability must be confirmed for your party and luggage.
What might we see along the river?
Mangrove waterways, island scenery and riverside life shape the experience. Look for kingfishers, cormorants, herons and water monitors. Wildlife, flowers, sunrise and sunset are never guaranteed.
Can I book my safari online?
Yes. Eligible fixed-price bookings confirm automatically when submitted online. Quote-only arrangements confirm after you accept the complete offer. Payment is tracked separately; online payment is not collected yet.
Choose your Madu River experience
Standard Madu River Boat Safari brings together mangrove scenery, a cinnamon demonstration and life along the river in a shorter outing. The boat is private to your booking party.
Private Madu River Boat Safari follows the longer island route, including a visit to Kothduwa Temple and a view of Five Cent Island from the boat.
Private Madu River Birdwatching Safari allows more time for quiet cruising and observation. Choose this trip when birds and their wetland habitat are the main reason for your visit.
Private Madu River Boat Safari and Turtle Visit combines the river route with an educational turtle-centre visit. The package includes the required travel between the jetty and the turtle venue.
Sri Lankan visitors can request a Day Outing Package with Lunch. Companies and organised parties of at least 20 guests can request a Corporate or Group Boat Tour Package.
See the route before you book
Madu River, also called Madu Ganga, is part of the wetland landscape around Balapitiya. Your route may include mangrove waterways, island stops and views of traditional river activity. The package page explains which stops are included and whether you land or view a place from the boat.
Look out for birds along the water and ask about the mangroves that grow here. Wildlife sightings depend on the day. A fish-spa activity, where available, is optional and costs extra.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are optional additions. Choose a tuk-tuk or car from Ahungalla, Kosgoda, Induruwa, Bentota, Beruwala, Ambalangoda, Hikkaduwa or Akurala. Select pickup, drop-off or both. Each selected journey is shown separately in your booking summary.
Hotel pickup and drop-off are extra services. Select the journeys you need during booking; the applicable charge appears only after you select that option. Local visitor transfers and other nearby areas are quoted to match your plans. Hotel travel time is additional to the boat trip.

Eligible fixed-price bookings are confirmed automatically when you submit your chosen future date and start time. No inventory check or staff approval is required. Payment is tracked separately and starts as unpaid. Group tours, lunch, Local turtle bundles with children and unpriced services start with a quotation to agree the fare. Per-person safari fares charge ages 12+ at the adult rate, ages 5–11 at 50%, and children under 5 free; Local whole-boat fares stay unchanged.

Will other visitors join our boat?
The boat is reserved for your booking party. Standard, Private, Birdwatching and Turtle Visit packages all use a private boat. The difference is the route and the included experience.
What is the minimum booking?
Individual packages require at least two guests. Foreign adult prices show the two-adult minimum total. The Corporate or Group Boat Tour Package requires at least 20 guests.
Can I arrange only a hotel pickup?
Yes. Pickup and drop-off are separate choices. You can select either journey or both, and you can give a different address for each leg.
