Madu River guide
Planning a Madu River Boat Safari with Children
A family river outing works best when the practical details are settled before the day. Think about how long your children enjoy sitting in a boat, which stops interest them and what help they may need when boarding. Tell us the children’s ages and your whole party size before paying so that the route, equipment and fare can be checked together.

Choose a manageable length
The Standard Madu River Boat Safari is the shorter private option, planned for about 90 minutes. It includes mangrove scenery and a cinnamon demonstration without a temple landing. The longer Private safari is planned for about two hours and adds a Kothduwa temple landing. Both use a private boat for your booking.
The Birdwatching Safari allows more time for observation, while the turtle combination includes a separate land venue and takes about four hours overall, excluding hotel journeys. A longer outing is not automatically a better family choice. Choose the experience that fits your children’s interests and the rest of your day.
Ask about life jackets and boarding before payment
Ask whether suitable, correctly fitting life jackets can be supplied for each child’s age and size. Do not assume that an adult jacket or a private boat makes every age suitable. Tell us about infants, mobility needs or any difficulty stepping between the landing place and boat so the actual arrangements can be checked.
Every passenger, including a baby or toddler, counts toward the capacity of the assigned boat. Keep your party details accurate and tell us if they change. Boarding arrangements, seating and access need confirmation for your family; they should not be guessed from a photograph of a different boat.
Confirm the family price clearly
Our safari packages page shows Local and Foreign offers. Read the price unit: a whole-boat fare stays the same when children travel. On per-person safari fares, ages 12+ pay the adult rate, ages 5–11 pay 50%, and children under 5 travel free. Individual bookings need at least two guests, and Foreign per-person fares require two paying adults. Enter every child’s age as at the safari date when booking.
Age concessions apply to per-person safari fares. They do not reduce Local whole-boat fares or hotel vehicle charges, and do not make separately charged meals, admissions or activities free. Group tours, lunch and Local turtle bundles with children still need a complete quotation. The booking and payments guide explains how your booking becomes confirmed.
Prepare for a comfortable outing
Follow the boatman’s instructions and supervise children throughout the trip. Keep hands inside the boat and let children watch wildlife without feeding, touching or chasing it. A fish spa is optional and paid separately; your family does not need to participate to enjoy the river.
- Bring drinking water and any personal essentials your children need, unless your confirmed inclusions say these are supplied.
- Choose comfortable clothing and footwear for boarding. Bring sun and rain protection appropriate to the forecast.
- If your route lands at the temple, dress respectfully and follow the instructions given there.
- Tell us in advance if you need information about toilets, shade, steps or a place to manage a child’s needs. We will confirm what is actually available.
Can we bring a baby?
Contact us with the baby’s age and your party details before payment. Suitability depends on appropriate equipment, the assigned boat and boarding arrangements, which need to be checked for your booking.
Is a private boat a guarantee that the trip is suitable for us?
No. A private boat means your booking has its own boat. Age, equipment fit, access needs, weather and the planned outing still matter.
Can you collect us from our hotel?
Check the pickup and drop-off options for your area. Choose the hotel legs you need and provide your family’s full passenger details so suitable arrangements can be confirmed.
